According to Heat reporter Ira Winderman, the Heat may lay off Fontechio in order to avoid taxes.
Fontekio joined the Heat this summer with Duncan Robinson's first signing and then exchange, with his contract of $8.3 million left. There are currently 14 formal contract players in the Heat, with a total salary of 189.2 million next season and a luxury tax line of 187.8 million next season. If Fontekio is cut with extended terms, the Heat can pay Fontekio a salary of 8.3 million next season in three years, and at the same time reduce the total salary below the luxury tax line.
