World Cup qualifiers European Division Group D, Azerbaijan defeated Iceland 0-5. 70-year-old coach Santos coached the team so far so far, 0 wins, 2 draws and 9 losses.
Azerbaijan currently ranks 122 in the world, and is the last in Europe. In the 11 games led by Santos, Estonia and Latvia, which were ranked lower, failed to win, and there were also games that defeated Sweden 0-6 and Haiti 0-3.
The Azerbaijan Football Association is also very angry about this. Farajulayev, Secretary-General of the Azerbaijan Football Association, severely criticized Santos in an interview and hinted that he wanted him to resign voluntarily: "There is nothing to say, but at the same time, there are many things to say. These young men should not get such management and results. We respect our opponents, but if the game adopts this defensive posture from the beginning, then this is our own problem."
"Improper tactical choices indicate that the coach has not done his homework, and his attitude towards Azerbaijani football and the people is incorrect. Listen to Santos's speech at the post-match press conference, I hope he can take responsibility and we don't need such cowardly football. If the coach does not resign, we will take measures and hope he will make the right decision."
According to Azerbaijani media AzeriSport, Santos has decided not to voluntarily resign. If he is fired, he is expected to receive a liquidated damages of about 2 million euros. The media said Santos will not give up the money and he has a contract with Azerbaijan until 2027.
