According to the Telegraph, the UEFA Super Cup may be transformed into a tournament that will be played by four teams before the start of the season. This opens the possibility of moving the season opener outside Europe, where the United States or the Middle East may be the destination.

The European football management agency has previously proposed the prospect of reforming the Super Cup system. A new UEFA Champions League "Opening Championship" was mentioned in a document circulated in 2022 to sell the 2024-2027 cycle.

It is understood that this will involve four clubs, two semi-finals and one final, but there is no further details about other qualifying, except for (presumably) the two current selected championships (considering that winning the UEFA Cup means automatically qualifying for the Champions League).

The idea was quietly put on hold but could resurface in a new round of copyright bids that UEFA and its newly designated U.S. media copyright sales partner Relevent are evaluating.

European broadcasters are unlikely to raise their offer, but Relevent will try to target growth in the U.S. market, which has already had a strong interest in competitive matches between clubs.

Earlier this week, the Spanish Football Association proposed plans to hold the Barcelona-Villa Real League match at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on December 21. The SFC has approved the proposal and will now seek permission from UEFA and FIFA, although fan groups and Real Madrid have expressed opposition. UEFA President Cheferin has stated that the possibility of a Champions League match outside Europe, especially in the United States, has been discussed and is "possible".
