The Knicks recently fired the head coach Thibodeau who led the team to the Eastern Conference Finals and are searching for new coaches. They are interested in Mavericks head coach Kidd and are conducting due diligence on new coach candidates such as Kidd.
According to famous reporter Marc Stein, some "favorable" observers in the league said that if the Knicks made a formal interview application for Kidd, the Mavericks are likely to refuse the Knicks and Kidd's negotiations on the head coach's vacancies. Just as the Rockets have said that if the Knicks ask for an interview with Uduka, they will refuse.
In May 2024, Kidd and the Mavericks completed an early contract renewal after the first round of the playoffs, when there were rumors that the Lakers were seeking a new coach (fired Ham). After renewing the contract early, Kidd led the Mavericks to the finals. After the end of this season, Kidd and the Mavericks have two years left on their contract.
